Serves 6 – 8
Ingredients:
For the Beef and Marinade:
- 3lbs (1350g) ground beef
- 6 tbsp soy sauce
- 3 tbsp oyster sauce
- 3 tbsp Chinese black vinegar
- 3 tbsp brown sugar
- 3 tbsp sesame oil
- 3 tsp grated ginger
- 3 garlic clove, minced
- 1 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for extra heat)
For the Spaghetti:
- 450g spaghetti noodles (or any pasta of choice)
- Salt (for water)
For the Sauce:
- 6 tbsp soy sauce
- 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 3 tbsp Chinese chili oil (adjust for spice preference)
- 6 tsp sesame oil
- 3 tsp rice vinegar
- 3 tbsp brown sugar
- 3/4 cup beef broth or water
- 3 tbsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
Garnishes (optional but recommended):
- 6 green onions, sliced
- 3 tbsp sesame seeds
- Fresh cilantro, chopped
- Red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- Lime wedges (for serving)
Instructions:
- Marinate the Beef:
- In a bowl, combine the ground beef with soy sauce, oyster sauce, Chinese black vinegar, brown sugar, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using).
- Mix well and let the beef marinate for at least 15-20 minutes (or up to an hour in the fridge for a deeper flavour).
- Cook the Spaghetti:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente.
- Drain and set aside, tossing with a little sesame oil to prevent sticking.
- Make the Sauce:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, Chinese chili oil, sesame oil, rice vinegar, brown sugar, and beef broth (or water).
- If you want a thicker sauce, whisk in the cornstarch (dissolved in three tablespoons of water).
- Set aside.
- Cook the Beef:
- Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the marinated beef and cook, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned and fully cooked (about 5-7 minutes). For extra flavour, I added 2 tsps of chicken bouillon powder.
- Drain any excess fat if necessary.
- Combine Beef and Sauce:
- Pour the prepared sauce into the pan with the cooked beef. Stir well and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes to thicken and coat the beef in the sauce.
- Toss with Spaghetti:
- Add the cooked spaghetti to the pan and toss everything together until the pasta is evenly coated with the beef and sauce.
- Garnish & Serve:
- Serve the Asian Beef Spaghetti in bowls, garnished with sliced green onions, sesame seeds, chopped cilantro, and optional red pepper flakes for extra heat. Add lime wedges on the side for a fresh zesty kick.
